Navi Mumbai Student Assaulted Over Marathi Language Dispute

Incident Overview

In Navi Mumbai, a student was allegedly assaulted outside a college following a heated exchange on a WhatsApp group. The conflict arose when the student, in a semi-threatening tone, urged others to communicate in Marathi, invoking the name of Raj Thackeray, the chief of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS). This incident highlights ongoing tensions surrounding language use in Maharashtra.

Details of the Altercation

The altercation began when some students in the college WhatsApp group were conversing in Hindi. In response, another student insisted they switch to Marathi, warning that “Raj Thackeray will come.” This comment sparked an argument that escalated quickly. The following day, around 10:30 am, four students, including Faizan Naik, confronted and attacked the student outside their college in Vashi. Naik reportedly struck the 20-year-old on the head with a hockey stick, causing severe injuries.

Police Investigation and Response

Assistant Commissioner of Police (Vashi) Adinath Budhwant confirmed that a First Information Report (FIR) has been filed at the Vashi police station. The FIR addresses the dispute between two groups stemming from the WhatsApp conversation. Mr. Budhwant stated that the complainant was beaten with a stick and assured that an investigation is underway to ensure appropriate action against those involved.

MNS Involvement and Reaction

Following the incident, MNS Spokesperson Gajanan Kale, along with other party members, met with police officials to demand swift action against the attackers. They also visited the injured student and his family to offer support. The involvement of MNS underscores the party’s ongoing focus on promoting Marathi language and culture.

Implications and Context

This incident is part of a broader pattern of language-related conflicts in Maharashtra, where MNS has previously been involved in similar disputes. The party has been known for its aggressive stance on promoting Marathi and has been linked to several assaults over perceived insults to the language.
