Netanyahu Defends Gaza Offensive Amid Rising Global Criticism

Netanyahu’s Stance on Gaza Offensive

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reiterated his commitment to a military offensive in Gaza, stating that Israel “has no choice but to finish the job and complete the defeat of Hamas.” Speaking to foreign media in Jerusalem, Netanyahu emphasized that the goal is not to occupy Gaza but to liberate it. He addressed what he described as a “global campaign of lies” against Israel’s plans, which have faced increasing condemnation both domestically and internationally.

Military Strategy and Timetable

Netanyahu outlined a “fairly short timetable” for the next steps in Gaza, which include demilitarizing the area, ensuring Israeli military security control, and establishing a non-Israeli civilian administration. In a notable shift, he has instructed the Israeli military to allow more foreign journalists into Gaza, marking a significant change from previous restrictions.

Humanitarian Concerns and Casualties

The conflict has resulted in significant casualties, with at least 26 Palestinians killed while seeking aid in the Gaza Strip. Hospitals reported receiving bodies from areas where aid was being distributed. The deaths occurred near food convoy routes and aid distribution points, highlighting the dire humanitarian situation. The U.S. and Israel-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation has faced challenges with aid distribution amid reports of gunfire near its sites.

International and Domestic Reactions

Netanyahu’s plans have sparked outrage both internationally and within Israel. Families of Israeli hostages have called for a general strike to protest the expansion of military operations. Tens of thousands of Israelis rallied in Tel Aviv against the government’s decision to take over Gaza City, fearing it could endanger hostages still held by Hamas.

Impact on West Bank and Broader Implications

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz announced that military operations would continue in the West Bank’s refugee camps until year-end. The ongoing conflict has led to significant displacement, with approximately 40,000 Palestinians forced from their homes this year. The situation remains tense as violence continues to escalate following Hamas’ attack on southern Israel.
