Netanyahu Expands Gaza Operation, Aims to Defeat Hamas

Netanyahu’s Expanded Gaza Strategy

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced an expanded plan for the takeover of Gaza, emphasizing that Israel “has no choice but to finish the job” in defeating Hamas. Initially revealed on Friday, the operation now includes not only Gaza City but also the “central camps” and Muwasi, areas with a population exceeding 500,000. Netanyahu has discussed this strategy with President Donald Trump, expressing gratitude for America’s unwavering support.

Objectives of the Gaza Takeover

Netanyahu clarified that the goal is not to occupy Gaza but to liberate it from Hamas control. The Israeli Security Cabinet has outlined five principles for concluding the conflict: disarming Hamas, returning all hostages, demilitarizing the Gaza Strip, maintaining Israeli security control, and establishing a new civil administration independent of both Hamas and the Palestinian Authority. Defense Minister Israel Katz has been authorized to mobilize over 400,000 military reservists to execute this plan by November 30.

International Reactions and Implications

The announcement comes amid a shift in international stances, with several of Israel’s allies moving towards recognizing a Palestinian state. France initiated this trend earlier in the year, followed by the United Kingdom and Canada. Most recently, Australia declared its intention to recognize Palestinian statehood, contingent on commitments from the Palestinian Authority regarding Gaza’s demilitarization and elections excluding Hamas.

Australia’s Position on Palestinian Statehood

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese emphasized that a two-state solution is crucial for ending violence in the Middle East. He reiterated Australia’s designation of Hamas as a terrorist organization and called for the return of Israeli hostages. Albanese criticized Israel for allegedly violating international law by restricting aid to Gaza.

Global Diplomatic Tensions

The U.S. continues to support Israel at the United Nations against genocide accusations. However, other U.N. Security Council members like China and Russia have criticized Israel’s actions in Gaza as “collective punishment” and “reckless intensification of hostilities,” respectively.
