Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is poised to expand military operations in Gaza, with his security cabinet expected to finalize decisions soon. This plan, which has sparked concerns among senior military officers, involves a phased takeover of the Gaza Strip over approximately five months. The operation could displace around one million Palestinians, as reported by The Times of Israel. Netanyahu emphasizes the necessity of defeating Hamas to secure the release of hostages held since the October 2023 attack.
Military Preparations and Displacement Orders
On Wednesday, the Israeli military issued new displacement orders in northern Gaza City and southern Khan Yunis, indicating preparations for a full occupation. Ground troops are set to expand combat operations, targeting areas where hostages are believed to be held, including densely populated regions like Gaza City and refugee camps.
Inside Israel’s Military Plan
The plan reportedly begins with seizing Gaza City and expanding aid distribution centers in collaboration with the United States. The goal is to dismantle Hamas’s presence and pressure them into releasing hostages. The initial phase involves evacuating around one million residents from Gaza City, allowing for the establishment of civilian infrastructure in central Gaza.
US Involvement and Humanitarian Aid
US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee announced plans to increase aid sites significantly, contingent on Israeli military advancements. The expansion is expected to last four to five months, funded by approximately $1 billion in donations from the US and other countries.
Alternative Strategies and Military Concerns
An alternative strategy involves encircling key areas and launching targeted raids instead of a full occupation. However, Netanyahu has rejected this plan. Military leaders express concerns about the risks of expanding operations, fearing it could endanger hostages and lead to prolonged conflict.
Government and Military Tensions
Tensions between the military and Netanyahu’s government have surfaced as strategic disagreements persist. Military chief Eyal Zamir has criticized the lack of strategic clarity, warning against a full occupation. Despite these concerns, Defence Minister Israel Katz insists that once decisions are made by the government, the military will execute them with determination.
