An off-duty NYPD officer, Didarul Islam, was tragically killed in a shooting incident in Manhattan on Monday. The 36-year-old officer, a father of two with a third child on the way, was working security at a Midtown office building when he was fatally shot. Islam, an immigrant from Bangladesh, had joined the NYPD to protect his city and leave a legacy for his family. His untimely death has left his family and the community in mourning.
The shooter, identified as 27-year-old Shane Tamura from Las Vegas, opened fire inside the office building housing Blackstone and NFL headquarters. Tamura, who had a history of mental health issues, began his rampage in the lobby before moving to another floor. He ultimately turned the gun on himself after killing four people, including Islam. Reports suggest that Tamura may have had grievances against the NFL.
President Donald Trump expressed his condolences to the victims’ families and praised law enforcement efforts to investigate the incident. New York City Mayor Eric Adams, himself a former NYPD officer, honored Islam’s sacrifice and ordered flags to be flown at half-staff. Governor Kathy Hochul echoed these sentiments and called for a national assault weapons ban in response to the tragedy.
The shooting has sparked widespread grief and calls for action against gun violence. Controversial Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani also paid tribute to Islam, highlighting his dedication to his family and community. The incident has reignited debates over gun control laws, with leaders urging Congress to take decisive action.
Blackstone confirmed that one of its executives, Wesley LePatner, was among those killed. The NFL reported that one of its employees was seriously injured during the attack. Both organizations are cooperating with authorities as investigations continue.
