The Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) is set to provide crucial support to the Cincinnati Police Department following a violent incident that captured national attention. This decision was announced in a press release by Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, Cincinnati Mayor Aftab Pureval, and Cincinnati Police Chief Teresa Theetge. The move comes after a brutal assault in downtown Cincinnati went viral, prompting widespread concern and calls for action.
In response to community concerns about rising violence, local authorities have sought assistance from the OSHP. The patrol will focus on traffic enforcement, allowing local officers to concentrate on investigating other crimes. Additionally, the OSHP’s Aviation Unit will support efforts to reduce violent crime, assist in searches for criminal suspects, and help manage vehicle pursuits.
Governor Mike DeWine, who has been in office since early 2019, emphasized the importance of state support in times of need. He highlighted that Ohio has a comprehensive package of law enforcement services available to assist local authorities. This approach has proven effective in other cities across the state.
Beyond traffic and aviation support, Governor DeWine has offered further resources if required. These include assistance from the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction and the Ohio Department of Youth Services to track individuals not complying with parole conditions. The Ohio Narcotics Intelligence Center will provide evidence analysis and intelligence gathering, while the Ohio Investigative Unit will target liquor establishments involved in illegal activities.
This collaborative effort underscores the commitment of state and local authorities to ensure public safety and address community concerns effectively.
