Jammu and Kashmir’s former Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, has alleged that he was placed under house arrest upon returning from Delhi. Sharing images on social media, he highlighted a significant police presence, including an armored vehicle outside his residence. Abdullah described this situation as the “tyranny of the unelected,” referencing a phrase by the late Arun Jaitley to emphasize his point. He accused unelected officials in New Delhi of detaining elected representatives in Jammu and Kashmir.
The administration, led by the Lieutenant Governor, imposed restrictions across Srinagar, preventing public gatherings to commemorate Kashmir Martyrs’ Day. This day marks the 1931 massacre when 22 people were killed by Maharaja Hari Singh’s forces during protests against his rule. The administration denied permission for any events at the Martyrs’ Graveyard, warning of strict action against violators.
Alongside Omar Abdullah, several political figures, including former Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah and PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti, faced house arrest. Mehbooba Mufti criticized the restrictions, urging for mutual recognition of historical heroes to bridge cultural divides. Sajad Lone, another political leader, expressed dismay over the government’s actions, emphasizing the sacredness of July 13 for Kashmiris.
July 13 holds historical significance as it led to political reforms in Jammu and Kashmir after years of autocratic rule. Previously marked by official ceremonies and tributes, these observances have been curtailed since the revocation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status in 2019. The administration has shifted focus to other public holidays, reflecting changes in political priorities.
