On Wednesday morning, U.S. Capitol Police (USCP) officers arrested a 23-year-old man from Oregon after discovering a cache of weapons in his vehicle parked illegally on Capitol grounds. The man, identified as Nolan R. Churan, was found with a tricycle strapped to the roof of his Subaru Outback, which was parked in a reserved area for congressional staff on Pennsylvania Avenue, NW. The vehicle lacked the necessary parking permit, prompting officers to investigate further.
Upon inspection, officers noticed several suspicious items inside the car, including a bow and arrow, a knife, and an empty pistol holster. Further investigation revealed an arsenal of weapons: a rifle, handgun, multiple knives, a halberd axe, a rapier sword, and numerous rounds of ammunition. Churan is facing multiple charges, including carrying a pistol and rifle without a license, possession of a dangerous weapon (sword), possession of high-capacity ammunition feeding devices, and possession of unregistered firearms and ammunition.
USCP analysts utilized Churan’s driver’s license to locate him near the North Barricade of the Capitol building. During an interview with officers, Churan allegedly admitted to having guns inside his vehicle. This admission led to a search by the USCP Crime Scene Evidence Specialists, aided by the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department’s firearms detection K-9 unit.
The USCP’s Threat Assessment Section is actively investigating Churan’s motives for being on Capitol grounds with such an arsenal. As of Wednesday afternoon, no connection to Congress had been established. Authorities continue to delve into Churan’s background to determine any potential threats or affiliations. The USCP has not yet responded to requests for further comment on the incident.
