A serious clerical error at the Orleans Parish Jail resulted in the mistaken release of Khalil Bryan, a violent offender facing multiple charges. The Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office confirmed the incident, attributing it to human error involving misidentification due to a shared last name. Sheriff Susan Hutson has taken full responsibility and initiated an internal investigation to address the lapse. Disciplinary actions are expected as part of the corrective measures.
Khalil Bryan was in custody for several offenses, including illegal possession of stolen property, possession of drug paraphernalia, and resisting an officer. Additionally, he had an active warrant for aggravated assault with a firearm, domestic abuse, child endangerment, and home invasion. Bryan was also wanted in Jefferson Parish on a $100,000 bench warrant for failure to appear and a separate $25,000 bond related to recent felony charges.
Orleans Parish District Attorney Jason Williams expressed deep concern over the release, highlighting systemic issues in inmate processing. The DA’s office is actively working to ensure all victims are notified and supported. Victim advocates have been dispatched to reach out to those affected by Bryan’s release.
This incident follows a high-profile escape from the same jail ten weeks ago when ten inmates fled. Nine were recaptured, but one remains at large. The recent error underscores ongoing security challenges at the facility.
Law enforcement agencies are collaborating across parish lines to locate and detain Khalil Bryan. The public is urged to report any information regarding his whereabouts to authorities immediately.
