Union Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju and AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi have engaged in a heated exchange over the status of minority communities in India. The debate was sparked by Rijiju’s assertion that minorities in India receive more benefits and protection than the majority, citing that Indian Muslims do not migrate to neighboring countries like Pakistan due to the advantages provided by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Rijiju emphasized that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s welfare schemes are inclusive, offering additional support to minority groups. Owaisi, however, challenged this perspective, arguing that Indian Muslims remain in the country not because of governmental benefits but due to their resilience and determination to fight for their rights. He criticized the notion that minorities’ rights are seen as charity, pointing out historical instances where Indian Muslims have stood their ground against oppression. Owaisi also highlighted issues such as the demolition of Muslim-owned properties despite legal orders, and the social and economic marginalization faced by Muslim communities. Rijiju’s comments were made during an interview with the Indian Express and later shared on social media, where he claimed that Modi’s government has ensured minority communities are active participants in India’s development. He argued that these communities receive more government support than the majority Hindu population. Owaisi responded by questioning whether being labeled as outsiders or facing violence constitutes protection. He expressed concern over the lack of infrastructure in Muslim-concentrated areas and criticized changes to the Waqf law, which he believes undermine Muslim representation. The government maintains that these changes aim to enhance fairness and transparency.
