Pakistan’s Army Chief, Asim Munir, has made a provocative statement from American soil, warning of potential nuclear conflict. Speaking at an event in Tampa, Florida, Munir declared that if Pakistan faces an existential threat in a future conflict with India, it would not hesitate to use its nuclear arsenal. “We are a nuclear nation. If we think we are going down, we’ll take half the world down with us,” he stated, marking the first instance of such a threat being issued from US territory.
Munir also addressed the ongoing tensions surrounding the Indus Waters Treaty. He threatened to target any infrastructure India constructs on the Indus water channels, which could disrupt water flow to Pakistan. Munir emphasized that Pakistan has ample missile capabilities to counteract India’s actions. He criticized India’s decision to suspend the treaty following the Pahalgam terror attack in April, warning that it could endanger 250 million people with potential starvation.
This visit marks Munir’s second trip to the US in two months. During his previous visit, he attended a White House luncheon with President Trump and proposed Trump’s nomination for a Nobel Prize for his peace efforts—a suggestion he reiterated at the Florida event. The gathering was attended by approximately 120 Florida-based individuals of Pakistani origin, with strict security measures prohibiting digital devices.
Munir dedicated part of his speech to reflecting on recent military conflicts with India. He urged India to acknowledge its losses during a four-day war and expressed Pakistan’s willingness to disclose its own losses if India reciprocates. He referenced Surah Al-Fil from the Quran to illustrate Pakistan’s potential military strategy against India.
Amidst speculation about his political ambitions, Munir advocated for military involvement in Pakistani politics. He argued that both war and politics are too significant to be left solely to generals or politicians.
