Patrick Bailey’s Historic Walk-Off Inside-the-Park Home Run

San Francisco Giants catcher Patrick Bailey made Major League Baseball history with a remarkable walk-off inside-the-park home run against the Philadelphia Phillies. The dramatic moment unfolded at Oracle Park, where the Giants were trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the ninth inning. With two runners on base, Bailey faced Phillies reliever Jordan Romano. On the first pitch, Bailey launched the ball deep into right-center field. It struck the top of the brick wall and ricocheted past two Phillies outfielders, rolling towards left field.

Bailey sprinted around the bases as third-base coach Matt Williams waved him home, ultimately scoring and securing a 4-3 victory for San Francisco. This feat marked Bailey as the first catcher since Bennie Tate in 1926 to achieve an inside-the-park walk-off home run. Baseball data analyst Sarah Langs noted that Pat Moran accomplished a similar feat in 1907 for the Chicago Cubs.

Reflecting on his achievement, Bailey expressed surprise and humor, admitting he hoped the ball would clear the fence and couldn’t recall hitting an inside-the-park homer at any level before. Giants manager Bob Melvin praised Bailey’s clutch performance, highlighting his ability to deliver in crucial moments throughout the season.

Bailey’s historic hit was also notable as he became the first player in nearly nine years to hit an inside-the-park home run, following Tyler Naquin of the Cleveland Guardians in August 2016. Adding to the day’s unique events, A’s outfielder Lawrence Butler began his game against the Atlanta Braves with an inside-the-park home run. According to OPTA Stats, this marked the first instance in MLB history where both a leadoff and walk-off inside-the-park home run occurred on the same day.
