PETA Sues Maine Lobster Festival Over Alleged Cruelty in Lobster Steaming

PETA’s Legal Action Against Maine Lobster Festival

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has initiated legal proceedings against the Maine Lobster Festival and the City of Rockland, citing the steaming of lobsters as “egregiously cruel.” The lawsuit, filed on July 24 in Knox County Superior Court, seeks to halt the practice, which PETA argues violates Maine’s animal cruelty laws. The organization is requesting a permanent injunction to prevent the steaming of live lobsters on public lands, labeling the event a “public nuisance.”

Allegations of Animal Cruelty

PETA’s lawsuit highlights the festival’s method of preparing lobsters, claiming it subjects approximately 16,000 lobsters to illegal torment and death each year. The group contends that this practice forces individuals visiting Harbor Park and surrounding areas to witness extreme animal suffering. PETA Foundation Director of Litigation Asher Smith described the event as “municipally supported cruelty” and emphasized the need to restore Rockland residents’ ability to enjoy public spaces without exposure to such displays.

Response from Festival Organizers

In response to PETA’s allegations, the Maine Lobster Festival and Rockland Festival Corporation issued a statement denying any wrongdoing. They assert that their culinary practices are both legal and widely accepted globally. The organizers argue that there is no scientific consensus indicating that lobsters experience pain similarly to mammals, as they lack a brain capable of processing pain.

Ongoing Debate Over Lobster Welfare

The lawsuit has sparked a broader discussion about animal welfare and culinary traditions. While PETA advocates for more humane treatment of lobsters, festival organizers maintain that their methods are consistent with longstanding practices in homes and restaurants worldwide. This legal battle underscores the ongoing tension between animal rights organizations and traditional culinary events.
