On Sunday, emergency services swiftly responded to a small plane crash at London Southend Airport. The airport confirmed via social media that a “serious incident” had occurred involving a general aviation aircraft. The crash resulted in a significant fireball and thick black smoke, as captured in images shared online. The aircraft involved was reportedly 12 meters (39 feet) in length.
John Johnson, who witnessed the event while at the airport with his family, described seeing a “big fireball” following the crash. According to Johnson, the plane took off and shortly after began banking heavily to the left. Within seconds, it inverted and crashed headfirst into the ground, resulting in an explosive fireball.
The airport’s fire service was quick to respond, deploying two fire engines to the scene. Local police, ambulance, and additional fire services followed promptly. Essex Police reported being alerted to the incident just before 4 p.m. local time. The airport is located approximately 45 miles (72 kilometers) east of London.
As a precautionary measure, nearby facilities including a golf club and rugby club were evacuated due to their proximity to the crash site. David Burton-Sampson, a local member of parliament, advised the public to avoid the area to allow emergency services to manage the situation effectively. He expressed his thoughts for those involved in the incident.
The airport’s website indicated that four flights scheduled for Sunday afternoon were canceled as a result of the incident. Details regarding the plane’s intended destination or the number of individuals on board have not been disclosed at this time. Essex Police stated that collaboration with emergency services would continue for several hours.
