The case against former JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna began in April 2024 when pen drives allegedly containing his sex videos emerged in Hassan, coinciding with the Lok Sabha election period. This revelation sparked a nationwide uproar, with Revanna claiming the leak was politically motivated to sabotage his electoral prospects. His election agent promptly filed an FIR, accusing opponents of circulating the videos to tarnish his image.
As the controversy unfolded, the Karnataka government established a Special Investigation Team (SIT) on April 27, 2024, to probe the allegations. The following day, Revanna and his father were charged with sexual harassment and criminal intimidation based on a complaint by their former domestic worker. The situation escalated when the complainant went missing, allegedly abducted by Revanna’s parents to prevent her testimony. By May 2, 2024, Karnataka Police had booked Revanna on rape charges and issued lookout notices.
The SIT rescued the abducted worker on May 4, 2024. Revanna was arrested upon his return from Germany on May 31, 2024. Despite multiple bail attempts, including appeals to the Karnataka High Court and the Supreme Court, he remained in custody as evidence mounted against him. Notably, his DNA was found on the alleged survivor’s clothing.
The trial commenced on May 2, 2025, in a Special Court for MPs and MLAs. After several months of proceedings, the court convicted Revanna of rape on August 1, 2025. This conviction marked a significant downfall for Revanna, whose political career was derailed by these legal battles.
