Priya Sachdev Kapur, the widow of late businessman Sunjay Kapur, finds herself at the heart of a contentious dispute over control of a Rs 30,000-crore business empire. The controversy erupted when Rani Kapur, Sunjay’s mother, penned a letter to the company’s board before its annual general meeting. In her letter, Rani identified herself as the majority shareholder in the Sona Group and alleged that she was coerced into signing various documents without proper explanation following her son’s death. The letter further accused unnamed individuals, presumably referring to Priya, of falsely claiming to represent the family.
Born into a Delhi-based family, Priya is the daughter of Ashok Sachdev, an automobile dealer. She pursued her education in mathematics and business management at University College London (UCL) and briefly studied at UCLA. Her career began in the spotlight with modeling assignments and a short-lived Bollywood stint in the 2005 film Neal ‘n’ Nikki. According to her LinkedIn profile, Priya currently serves as a non-executive director at Sona Comstar and director at Aureus Investment, the Kapur family’s investment firm. Priya’s professional journey commenced in mergers and acquisitions at Credit Suisse First Boston in London. She later returned to India to lead ventures across automotive retail, insurance, fashion, and e-commerce. She founded TSG International Marketing Pvt. Ltd. and co-created Rock N Shop, one of India’s early luxury e-commerce platforms. Additionally, she leads Aureus Polo, a team established by her late husband.
Priya’s personal life has often been in the public eye. Her first marriage was to American hotelier Vikram Chatwal. Despite initial appearances of a perfect union, Priya faced emotional challenges during this time. In an interview shortly before Sunjay’s death in May 2025, she reflected on realizing that her relationship with Vikram was not as she had envisioned during her pregnancy. After five years of marriage and a custody battle over their daughter, Priya divorced Vikram in 2011. In 2017, Priya married Sunjay Kapur, who had previously been married to actress Karishma Kapoor. Sunjay passed away from a heart attack on June 12 during a polo match in England. Priya and Sunjay have a son named Azarias.
As Priya faces public scrutiny and potential legal battles over succession and control within one of India’s leading automobile families, questions about authority over the Sona Group remain unresolved. With all eyes on Priya, the outcome of this dispute could significantly impact the future of the business empire.
