Puri Rath Yatra Sees 750 Devotees Hospitalized; 12 in ICU

The annual Rath Yatra in Puri, a significant religious event attracting thousands of devotees, witnessed a health crisis as approximately 750 attendees fell ill due to extreme heat and overcrowding. The event, known for its vibrant processions and spiritual significance, turned challenging for many as the combination of high temperatures and dense crowds led to widespread exhaustion. Health officials reported that over 230 individuals required hospitalization at the Infectious Disease Hospital, while around 520 others received medical attention at the district headquarters hospital. Among those affected, 12 individuals were admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), highlighting the severity of the situation.

The Rath Yatra is a major festival in Odisha, drawing pilgrims from across India and beyond. This year’s event was particularly challenging due to the intense summer heat, which exacerbated health issues among the attendees. Medical teams were on high alert throughout the festival, providing immediate care to those suffering from dehydration, heatstroke, and other related ailments. The local government had anticipated large crowds and had set up additional medical facilities to manage potential health emergencies. However, the sheer volume of affected individuals tested the limits of available resources.

Authorities are now reviewing safety protocols and considering additional measures for future events to prevent similar occurrences. The incident has sparked discussions about crowd management and emergency preparedness at large-scale religious gatherings. As the festival concluded, officials emphasized the importance of staying hydrated and taking precautions against heat-related illnesses. The Rath Yatra remains a cherished tradition, but this year’s health crisis serves as a reminder of the challenges posed by extreme weather conditions and large gatherings.
