At the Annual Legal Conclave 2025, Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, made a startling claim. He alleged that the late BJP leader Arun Jaitley had threatened him over his opposition to the farm laws. According to Mr. Gandhi, Jaitley warned him of consequences if he continued to protest against the government’s farm legislation. This statement has sparked a heated debate, drawing responses from both political allies and opponents.
Rohan Jaitley, son of the late Arun Jaitley and president of the Delhi and District Cricket Association, was quick to counter Mr. Gandhi’s claims. In a detailed online post, he highlighted a timeline discrepancy, pointing out that his father passed away in 2019, while the controversial farm laws were introduced in 2020. Rohan emphasized that it was not in his father’s nature to threaten political adversaries, as he was known for fostering open discussions and building consensus.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) dismissed Rahul Gandhi’s allegations as “fake news.” Amit Malviya, head of the BJP IT cell, criticized Mr. Gandhi for spreading misinformation. He clarified that Arun Jaitley could not have been involved in any discussions regarding the farm laws since they were enacted after his death. Malviya urged Mr. Gandhi to adhere to factual timelines and avoid misleading narratives.
The farm laws in question were introduced in 2020 as part of three separate legislations aimed at deregulating government-run wholesale markets. These laws faced massive protests from farmers across India, leading to their eventual repeal after more than a year of unrest. The controversy surrounding these laws has been a significant point of contention between the government and opposition parties.
This incident highlights ongoing tensions between the Congress party and the BJP over agricultural reforms and other policy issues. It also underscores the sensitivity required when discussing deceased political figures and their legacies. As political leaders continue to navigate these complex issues, maintaining factual accuracy and respectful discourse remains crucial.
