Mob Violence Erupts in Maharashtra

In a disturbing turn of events, supporters of Raj Thackeray, leader of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), took to the streets in Maharashtra, vandalizing a dance bar in Panvel near Mumbai. The incident occurred late last night following a provocative speech by Thackeray, who has been vocal against the operation of dance bars in the Raigad district. The MNS chief’s rhetoric has often been linked to acts of violence, as he champions his cause for Marathi pride.

Details of the Vandalism

Videos circulating on social media depict over a dozen men, armed with sticks, approaching the Night Riders bar. The group stormed inside, causing extensive damage to the property. According to police reports, the vandals broke furniture and smashed liquor bottles, leaving the interior ransacked with broken tables and shattered glasses. This act of aggression is seen as a direct response to Thackeray’s fiery speech earlier that evening.

Thackeray’s Controversial Speech

During a Kisan Mazdoor Party meeting in Panvel, Thackeray criticized the prevalence of dance bars in Raigad, which he described as the capital of Emperor Shivaji Maharaj. He questioned the ownership of these establishments and implied that they were detrimental to Marathi culture. His comments seemed to incite his followers, leading to the violent outburst.

Police Investigation Underway

The local police have initiated an investigation into the incident. They are currently gathering CCTV footage and recording witness statements to identify those involved and take appropriate action. This incident adds to a series of violent acts associated with Thackeray’s supporters, who have previously been accused of targeting non-Marathi individuals.

MNS Justifies Actions as Protest

MNS leader Sandip Deshpande defended the actions of party workers, labeling it a “symbolic protest” against what they claim are illegal bars. He urged government intervention, emphasizing that immediate action was necessary. This justification highlights ongoing tensions between MNS supporters and establishments they deem contrary to their cultural values.
