Senator Rand Paul, a Republican from Kentucky, has expressed his support for abolishing the Federal Reserve System. In a recent interview with Fox News Digital, Paul emphasized that his support hinges on the United States ceasing deficit spending and adopting a balanced budget approach. As a fiscal conservative and son of Ron Paul, a well-known critic of the Federal Reserve, Rand Paul remains skeptical about the likelihood of such changes occurring. He noted a shift in priorities within the GOP, observing that concerns about deficits have waned under different administrations.
Paul argues that interest rates should be determined by market forces rather than central bank interventions. He describes interest rates as a “universal price” and one of the most significant economic indicators. The senator criticized demands for rate cuts, likening them to unrealistic expectations for consumer goods pricing. He believes that a less interventionist Federal Reserve would better serve the economy by allowing supply and demand to dictate interest rates.
In addition to advocating for the abolition of the Federal Reserve, Paul is actively pushing for increased transparency within the institution. He supports a bill that calls for an audit of the Federal Reserve’s board of governors and banks by the Comptroller General of the United States. This proposed legislation has garnered support from some of Paul’s Republican colleagues.
Paul’s efforts extend beyond party lines, as evidenced by his collaboration with Senator Bernie Sanders on the “End the Fed’s Big Bank Bailout Act.” This measure aims to prevent Federal Reserve Banks from paying earnings on balances maintained by depository institutions. By working with lawmakers across the political spectrum, Paul seeks to address concerns about financial oversight and accountability.
