In a recent discussion on The Overlap Cricket, former Indian cricket coach Ravi Shastri made a striking revelation about the earnings of top Indian cricket stars. When asked about their approximate income, Shastri estimated that prominent players like MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli could earn around Rs 100 crore annually. Although he admitted uncertainty about the exact figures, Shastri highlighted the significant income generated through brand endorsements.
Shastri elaborated on how these cricket icons manage to secure such substantial earnings. He explained that players like Dhoni, Kohli, and Sachin Tendulkar in his prime, often engage in 15-20 advertisements. These endorsements are lucrative, allowing them to earn upwards of Rs 100 crore, equivalent to approximately 10 million pounds. Shastri noted that despite their busy schedules, these players dedicate a day for shooting ads, which can be utilized throughout the year.
Apart from discussing earnings, Shastri also expressed his admiration for Washington Sundar’s potential as a genuine Test all-rounder for India. The 25-year-old off-spinner made an impressive Test debut at the Gabba in 2021 but has since had limited opportunities in red-ball cricket. With 545 runs and 30 wickets in 11 Tests, Sundar has shown promise both with the bat and ball.
Shastri believes Sundar’s skills are particularly effective on turning tracks in India. He recalled how Sundar outperformed senior spinners during a series against New Zealand. Despite his limited appearances, Shastri is confident that Sundar can play a crucial role for India in Test cricket for many years to come.
