Massive Python Found in Downtown LA

A startling discovery was made at The Piero Apartments in downtown Los Angeles when a massive 20-foot python was spotted atop a dumpster in the parking garage. The unexpected presence of the snake caused alarm among residents, prompting a call for assistance. Despite attempts to reach animal control and the LAPD, it was reptile wrangler Joseph Hart who stepped up to handle the situation.

Joseph Hart’s Daring Rescue

Joseph Hart, known for his expertise in handling reptiles, arrived on the scene wearing just jeans and a T-shirt. With calm precision, he climbed into the dumpster and skillfully captured the python by gripping it just below the head, ensuring his safety from potential bites. Hart explained to KCAL that due to the python’s size and strength, removing it required special care.

Challenges of Capturing a Frightened Snake

The python, later named “Apples,” was understandably distressed by its predicament. Hart noted that the snake was reluctant to leave the dumpster, likely frightened by the crowd of onlookers. He shared a video of the capture on social media, describing it as “good old-fashioned reptile wrangling.”

Animal Cruelty Concerns and Health Issues

Hart expressed concern over the mistreatment of Apples, highlighting a severe mouth infection common among snakes in the pet trade. This condition could lead to tooth loss if untreated. He speculated that the previous owner may have been overwhelmed by potential veterinary costs, leading to the abandonment of the snake.

Rehabilitation and Recovery Efforts

Following her rescue, Apples is now receiving medical treatment in Riverside. With proper care and antibiotics, she is expected to recover fully within a few months. Hart’s mission extends beyond rescue; he aims to promote wildlife conservation through rehabilitation and public education.

Understanding Reticulated Pythons

Reticulated pythons are among the longest snake species globally, native to Southeast Asia. Their presence in urban settings like Los Angeles highlights issues related to exotic pet ownership and animal welfare.
