Senator Ron Johnson to Subpoena FBI, DOJ in Trump Assassination Attempt Investigation

Senator Ron Johnson, a Republican from Wisconsin, is preparing to issue subpoenas to the FBI and the Department of Justice as part of his ongoing investigation into last year’s assassination attempt on President Donald Trump. Johnson, who chairs the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, was a co-author of a bipartisan Senate Homeland Security Committee report that examined the attempt on Trump’s life during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Despite the initial findings, Johnson is determined to continue his probe, citing numerous obstacles and a lack of cooperation from federal agencies.

Investigation Faces Roadblocks

The investigation into the assassination attempt has been fraught with challenges. Johnson expressed frustration over what he describes as “stonewalling” by the FBI and DOJ, which he accuses of withholding crucial information needed to advance the inquiry. He emphasized his commitment to uncovering the truth, even if it means proceeding without bipartisan support. “I’d like our report to be bipartisan,” Johnson stated, “but everybody else seems to have been moving on here and not particularly interested in an investigation. I am.”

Details of the Assassination Attempt

The incident in question occurred nearly a year ago when gunman Thomas Crooks fired eight rounds from a rooftop near Trump’s rally stage. The attack resulted in the death of firefighter Corey Comperatore and injuries to several others before Crooks was killed. The preliminary report from the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee highlighted significant lapses in the U.S. Secret Service’s planning and security measures for the event.

Pursuing Accountability

Johnson’s push for subpoenas aims to secure documentation that he believes is being withheld by federal agencies. He hopes that his efforts will lead to a comprehensive and bipartisan final report. “I’m hoping they all join on,” he remarked, referring to other committee members. “But again, if not … I’ve got unilateral subpoena power, so I will issue that subpoena.”

Call for Transparency

The senator’s actions underscore a broader demand for transparency and accountability from federal agencies involved in the investigation. As Johnson moves forward with his inquiry, he remains steadfast in his pursuit of answers regarding the security failures that led to the assassination attempt.
