Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat recently made headlines with his remarks about leaders stepping back at the age of 75. His comments were made during the launch of the book “Moropant Pingale: The Architect of Hindu Resurgence” in Nagpur. Bhagwat recalled a statement by veteran RSS ideologue Moropant Pingale, who had once said that reaching the age of 75 symbolized a time to step aside and allow younger leaders to take charge. This statement was made by Pingale after being felicitated with a shawl on his 75th birthday, which he interpreted as a sign of respect and a gentle nudge towards generational change.
The opposition parties, including Congress and Shiv Sena (UBT), have seized upon Bhagwat’s remarks, interpreting them as indicative of underlying tensions between the RSS and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Shiv Sena MP Priyanka Chaturvedi suggested that the comments were a clear message about internal conflicts within the BJP, pointing out that when the BJP came to power in 2014, it had sidelined leaders over 75 into an advisory group known as the ‘margdarshak mandali’. She argued that the RSS is now reminding the BJP of its past promises, bringing internal disputes into the public eye.
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh added to the discourse by highlighting that both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and another senior leader will turn 75 in 2025, suggesting that Bhagwat’s comments could be targeting multiple senior figures within the party. The opposition’s interpretation of Bhagwat’s speech has sparked a political debate, with many questioning whether this signals a shift in leadership dynamics within the BJP.
In response to the political uproar, the RSS clarified that Bhagwat’s comments were solely in reference to Moropant Pingale and should not be linked to any other individuals or political implications. Despite this clarification, the remarks have fueled speculation about potential changes in leadership strategy within India’s ruling party.
