Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently expressed his disapproval of a performance of “Jesus Christ Superstar,” highlighting what he perceives as ongoing attacks on Christianity. During an interview on EWTN’s “The World Over,” Rubio was asked by host Raymond Arroyo about the possibility of supporting Cynthia Erivo’s performance at the Kennedy Center. Rubio, who holds an ex-officio membership at the center, responded negatively, stating that such performances are often designed to provoke and insinuate against Christian beliefs. He emphasized that for those of faith, these types of cultural provocations are not new.
Rubio elaborated on the historical context of Christianity being mocked and attacked since its inception. He noted that the Christian Church has traditionally been at its strongest when facing persecution, suggesting that adversity has often fortified the faith. Rubio pointed out that Christianity has always been countercultural, standing in opposition to prevailing societal norms. This countercultural stance, according to Rubio, is a fundamental aspect of the faith’s resilience and vibrancy.
The performance in question took place at the Hollywood Bowl in early August in Hollywood, California. Some Christians have expressed concern over Cynthia Erivo, a bisexual woman, portraying Jesus in the show. Rubio’s comments reflect a broader discourse on how religious narratives are represented in popular culture and the tensions that arise from such portrayals. He reiterated that while Christians do not seek persecution, they should be prepared for it as part of their faith journey, echoing Christ’s own teachings about facing hatred for his sake.
