India is on edge as they await the results of scans to determine the severity of Rishabh Pant’s foot injury. This injury poses significant “consequences” for the fourth Test against England at Old Trafford. Sai Sudharsan, who was at the crease with Pant and top-scored with 61 in India’s total of 264-4, expressed concern over Pant’s condition. Sudharsan noted that Pant “was in a lot of pain” and mentioned that the team would learn more about his condition overnight.
Pant’s absence could be a major blow to India’s batting strength. Sudharsan emphasized the importance of Pant’s role, stating, “We miss a batter if he doesn’t come back again, so it would definitely have consequences.” He added that the team would strive to compensate for the potential loss by batting long and negotiating the challenges ahead.
Pant showcased his aggressive style by counter-attacking after India slipped from 94-0 to 140-3 on the opening day in Manchester. He executed a slog-sweep against Jofra Archer and hit a straight six off Brydon Carse. However, his innings ended abruptly when he inside-edged a reverse sweep off Chris Woakes’ yorker onto his right boot, leading to a bruised and swollen foot.
Pant, who has been in excellent form with 462 runs at an average of 77 in this series, was taken off the field in visible pain. His ability to bat and keep wicket for the remainder of this crucial Test is now uncertain. India, trailing 2-1 in the series, must win this match to secure victory in the five-match contest.
England’s Liam Dawson, playing his first Test in eight years, expressed sympathy for Pant’s situation. Dawson, who took the key wicket of Yashasvi Jaiswal, admitted he thought his Test career was over before an injury to Shoaib Bashir opened up an opportunity. Dawson contributed with figures of 1-45 and shared his gratitude for being back in the Test arena.
