Amid growing concerns about artificial intelligence (AI) displacing jobs, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has expressed a positive outlook for Generation Z. According to a Fortune report, Altman believes that Gen Z, often referred to as the “luckiest” generation, will benefit from the technological advancements brought by AI. He shared these insights during an interview on the Huge If True podcast with host Cleo Abram.
Altman acknowledged that while AI might lead to the disappearance of certain job categories, this is part of a historical cycle of technological evolution. He emphasized that young people are typically more adaptable to such changes. However, he expressed concern for older generations, particularly those in their 60s, who may find it challenging to retrain or reskill in response to these shifts.
The OpenAI CEO highlighted the potential for AI to empower young creators by enabling them to quickly bring their ideas to fruition. He believes that Gen Z will be better equipped to navigate and thrive in an AI-driven world due to their adaptability and innovative spirit.
While Altman maintains an optimistic perspective, others in the tech industry have voiced concerns about AI’s societal impact. Mo Gawdat, a former Google executive, warned that AI could lead to significant job losses across various sectors, including white-collar roles. He predicted a period of social unrest as people adjust to these changes and grapple with the loss of traditional employment and purpose.
Gawdat’s views align with those of Geoffrey Hinton, known as the “godfather of AI,” who has cautioned about the potential for AI systems to develop their own languages, complicating human oversight. As discussions around AI’s role in society continue, the debate highlights both the opportunities and challenges posed by this rapidly advancing technology.
