The Fight to Save Nimisha Priya: A Humanitarian Mission in Yemen

Nimisha Priya, an Indian nurse from Kollankod in Kerala’s Palakkad district, faces a death sentence in Yemen. Her case transcends legal boundaries, becoming a deeply human story involving a mother’s tears, a daughter’s suffering, and the moral conscience of society. The mission to save her has been a relentless journey across countries and courtrooms since 2019, spearheaded by individuals determined to bring her home.
Samuel Jerom Bhaskar, a Gulf-based humanitarian, was instrumental in bringing Nimisha’s plight to light. In 2018, he approached General VK Singh, then Union Minister of State for External Affairs, highlighting her dire situation. His interview with Malayala Manorama’s Rony further raised awareness in Kerala, laying the groundwork for subsequent diplomatic efforts.
In 2019, a small newspaper clipping about Nimisha’s case caught my attention. This marked the beginning of my emotionally demanding journey to save her life in one of the world’s most conflict-ridden regions. By 2020, I had connected with Nimisha’s family and established direct communication with her in Sana’a Central Prison.
In October 2020, we formed the Save Nimisha Priya Action Council to coordinate legal, humanitarian, and diplomatic efforts. A public crowdfunding campaign was launched with significant media support. The council became the driving force behind the mission to secure Nimisha’s release.
In 2023, we sought permission from the Delhi High Court for Nimisha’s mother to visit her daughter in Yemen. With Ambassador Dr. Chandra Mauli’s guidance, we navigated the complexities of Yemeni tribal justice. Despite challenges and delays caused by internal disagreements within the council, efforts continued to secure a pardon through negotiations and financial settlements.
Nimisha’s mother remains in Yemen, visiting her daughter regularly and playing a crucial role in ongoing negotiations. Her resilience embodies the spirit of this mission—a testament to a mother’s love and determination.
This mission has garnered support from various dignitaries and good Samaritans worldwide. Their collective efforts have been vital in advancing our cause.
As Vice Chairperson of the Save Nimisha Priya International Action Council, I am committed to this humanitarian mission. It is not just about legalities but about listening to voices often ignored. I stand with them as a lawyer, activist, and fellow human being.
