Schumer Urges FBI to Assess National Security Risks in Epstein Files

Schumer’s Call for FBI Action

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has urged the FBI to conduct a counterintelligence threat assessment on the Jeffrey Epstein files. Speaking on the Senate floor, Schumer emphasized the need for the FBI to determine if foreign intelligence agencies could access sensitive information that President Trump has not released. He highlighted potential cyber intrusion risks and vulnerabilities that could be exploited by foreign entities, potentially gaining leverage over Trump, his family, or other senior officials.

Concerns Over National Security

Schumer expressed concerns about national security, urging the FBI to develop strategies to counter these threats. He criticized what he termed as an Epstein “cover-up,” targeting both President Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson for their roles in withholding the files. Schumer pointed out that Trump had promised transparency regarding the Epstein files during his campaign but has yet to fulfill this promise.

Potential Foreign Exploitation

The senator raised alarms about the possibility of adversaries like Russia, North Korea, or China accessing damaging information through cyberattacks. He stressed the importance of releasing the Epstein files to prevent potential blackmail scenarios involving high-ranking officials.

Recent Cybersecurity Breaches

Schumer referenced recent cybersecurity breaches involving Chinese actors hacking into U.S. government agencies, underscoring the urgency of safeguarding national security. He called for bipartisan efforts to protect American interests and families from similar threats.

House Legislative Session and Resolution

Last week, Speaker Johnson ended a House session early, avoiding a vote on a resolution that would have compelled the release of the Epstein files. Johnson argued that the resolution was reckless and violated federal rules protecting grand jury materials. He supported maximum disclosure but emphasized safeguarding victims’ identities.

Trump’s Response and Historical Context

During a meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Trump addressed questions about his past interactions with Epstein. He explained his decision to ban Epstein from Mar-a-Lago due to inappropriate behavior and reiterated his refusal to visit Epstein’s island. Trump claimed former President Bill Clinton and others had visited the island, distancing himself from such associations.
