During a recent visit to Beijing, Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir encountered pressing questions from China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi regarding the safety of Chinese nationals in Pakistan. This concern arises from a series of terror attacks over the years that have targeted Chinese personnel, projects, and institutions within Pakistan. The issue of security has become increasingly significant as several Chinese nationals have lost their lives in these attacks.
In response to these concerns, Munir emphasized the enduring “brotherhood” between China and Pakistan, describing their relationship as “solid as a rock.” He assured Wang Yi that the Pakistani military is committed to taking all necessary measures to ensure the safety of Chinese citizens. Munir’s assurances come in the wake of tragic incidents, such as the October 2024 suicide car bombing outside Karachi airport that claimed the lives of two Chinese engineers, and a March attack in northern Pakistan that killed five Chinese workers.
This visit marked Munir’s first trip to China following hostilities with India in May. It highlights Islamabad’s ongoing efforts to engage in military diplomacy aimed at strengthening regional partnerships and defense alliances. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to reposition Pakistan’s defense standing on the global stage.
Munir expressed deep appreciation for China’s unwavering support for Pakistan’s socio-economic development. He reiterated the Pakistani military’s resolve to enhance counter-terrorism cooperation with China, aligning with their shared vision for regional peace and prosperity. In turn, Wang Yi congratulated Munir on his promotion to Field Marshal and reaffirmed China’s steadfast support for its “iron-clad friend” and strategic partner, Pakistan.
The deepening ties between China and Pakistan have significant implications for regional dynamics, particularly concerning India’s security and economic interests. The Indian Army has noted China’s involvement in providing live inputs to Pakistan during Operation Sindoor, with Islamabad utilizing Chinese-made equipment during recent hostilities. This evolving partnership continues to shape the geopolitical landscape in South Asia.
