Senator Bill Cassidy, a Republican from Louisiana, has voiced strong opposition to the Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) recent decision to redirect funding away from mRNA vaccine development. Cassidy argues that this move undermines President Donald Trump’s agenda to improve national health. The decision, announced by HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., involves terminating 22 mRNA vaccine projects due to their ineffectiveness against upper respiratory infections like COVID-19 and influenza. Instead, the funds will be allocated to developing safer and broader vaccine platforms that remain effective despite viral mutations.
HHS’s Strategic Shift in Vaccine Development
According to an HHS press release, the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) will cease new mRNA-based projects while allowing some existing contracts, such as those with Arcturus and Amplitude, to continue. This strategic shift affects projects worth nearly $500 million. The Global Health Investment Corporation (GHIC), which manages BARDA Ventures, has also been instructed to halt all mRNA-based equity investments. However, other uses of mRNA technology within HHS remain unaffected.
