Shedeur Sanders, the promising rookie quarterback, encountered a significant hurdle in his quest for a starting position with the Cleveland Browns. Earlier on Wednesday, Sanders received encouraging news when the team announced he would start the upcoming preseason game if fellow quarterbacks Kenny Pickett and Dillon Gabriel remained sidelined due to injuries. However, Sanders’ own prospects took a hit after he suffered an oblique injury during training camp.
The injury occurred early in practice while Sanders was throwing, leading to his immediate withdrawal from the session. The Browns later confirmed the oblique injury, raising concerns about his availability for future practices and games. The severity of the injury remains uncertain, but it is expected that more information will emerge during joint practices with the Philadelphia Eagles ahead of their preseason matchup on Saturday.
Sanders’ path to a starting role was already challenging due to the competitive nature of the Browns’ quarterback lineup. He is currently listed as the fourth quarterback on the depth chart, trailing behind Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, and Dillon Gabriel. Deshaun Watson’s ongoing rehabilitation from a twice-torn Achilles further complicates the situation. Despite these challenges, Sanders impressed in his previous start against the Carolina Panthers, completing 14 of 23 passes for 138 yards and two touchdowns.
Head coach Kevin Stefanski has indicated that a decision regarding the starting quarterback will be made after this week’s game. With Flacco taking most first-team reps and both Pickett and Gabriel managing hamstring injuries, Sanders’ performance and recovery will be crucial in determining his future role. Despite limited opportunities with the first team, Sanders remains unfazed by his current standing and continues to focus on improving his game.
