Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, currently on a 14-day mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS), is preparing to conclude his groundbreaking journey. As the first Indian to visit the ISS, Shukla has been part of the Axiom 4 mission, also known as ‘Akash Ganga,’ which is instrumental in paving the way for India’s upcoming Gaganyaan human space flight mission. His return journey is scheduled to commence on July 14, marking a significant milestone in India’s space exploration efforts.
In a series of newly released images from the ISS, Shukla and his fellow crew members are seen enjoying a celebratory feast. The images capture the crew floating in zero gravity, smiling broadly as they partake in the meal. This feast symbolizes not only the camaraderie among the astronauts but also serves as a moment of reflection on their successful mission.
NASA has confirmed that Shukla and three other crew members will begin their return journey on July 14. Steve Stitch, Manager of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program, stated during a press conference that they are closely monitoring the progress of Axiom-4 and have set July 14 as the target date for undocking. The crew is expected to splash down several hours after undocking near the coast of California in the Pacific Ocean.
Group Captain Shukla’s mission is not only historic for being the first Indian visit to the ISS but also for conducting seven India-specific experiments. These experiments are crucial for advancing India’s capabilities in space exploration and contribute significantly to future missions like Gaganyaan. As Shukla prepares to return home, his achievements continue to inspire and pave the way for future Indian astronauts.
