Shubman Gill’s Near-Record Test Series Performance Earns Gavaskar’s Praise

Gill’s Impressive Run in England

India’s captain, Shubman Gill, showcased an exceptional performance during the England tour, amassing a total of 754 runs across five Test matches. This remarkable achievement placed him just shy of Sunil Gavaskar’s historic record for the most runs by an Indian batsman in a Test series. Gavaskar had set the benchmark with 774 runs during a four-match series against the West Indies in 1970-71. Gill entered the final match at The Oval needing 52 runs to surpass this record but fell short after scoring 21 and 11 in his two innings.

Gavaskar’s High Praise for Gill

Despite not breaking the record, Sunil Gavaskar expressed immense admiration for Gill’s performance. He highlighted the additional pressure Gill faced as captain, which Gavaskar did not experience during his own record-setting series. Gavaskar noted that Gill’s ability to handle both batting and leadership responsibilities was commendable. “I would go with Shubman Gill,” Gavaskar stated, emphasizing that Gill’s impact went beyond mere numbers.

Historical Context and Comparisons

Gill’s performance places him among the top Indian batsmen in Test series history. While he narrowly missed Gavaskar’s all-time record, he did surpass Gavaskar’s record for most runs scored by an Indian captain in a Test series. In 1978-79, Gavaskar had scored 732 runs against the West Indies over six Tests. Gill’s achievement is further underscored by his ability to lead the team while maintaining high personal performance.

Global Perspective on Test Series Records

Globally, Don Bradman holds the record for most runs in a Test series with 810 runs during the 1936/37 Ashes. Gill’s recent performance ranks him second on this prestigious list of captains, ahead of notable figures like Graham Gooch and Sunil Gavaskar himself.
