Shubman Gill Set for T20I Comeback and Vice-Captaincy in Asia Cup

Shubman Gill’s Anticipated Return to T20I Cricket

Shubman Gill is poised to make a significant return to T20I cricket as he is expected to be included in India’s squad for the upcoming Asia Cup, commencing on September 9 in the UAE. This tournament marks an important milestone for Gill, who is not only making a comeback but is also likely to be appointed as the vice-captain. His previous leadership experience during the Test series against England, where he scored 754 runs, has set the stage for his elevation in the T20I format.

Gill’s Leadership Role and Suryakumar Yadav’s Fitness

According to a report by RevSportz, Gill’s return is complemented by Suryakumar Yadav’s anticipated fitness for the tournament. With Yadav leading the team, Gill is expected to serve as his deputy. This development underscores Gill’s growing influence and leadership potential within the Indian cricket team across various formats.

Axar Patel’s Role and Historical Context

Axar Patel has been fulfilling the role of vice-captain following the retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma after the T20 World Cup last year. Gill’s last appearance in a T20I match was during India’s white-ball tour of Sri Lanka in 2024, under Gautam Gambhir’s coaching debut.

Suryakumar Yadav’s Impressive Captaincy Record

India’s current T20I captain, Suryakumar Yadav, has demonstrated remarkable leadership skills, winning 17 out of 22 matches since taking over from Rohit Sharma. His batting prowess is evident with 2,598 runs across 83 T20Is at an average of 38.2 and a strike rate of 167.07. Recently, he showcased his form by scoring 122 runs in four innings during the Mumbai T20 League.
