A newly declassified annex from the Durham report has revealed potential ties between George Soros’ Open Society Foundation and the dissemination of the Trump-Russia narrative. This document, released by the Senate Judiciary Committee, highlights what Chairman Chuck Grassley calls “one of the biggest political scandals and cover-ups in American history.” The appendix suggests that foreign sources, allegedly linked to Soros’ foundation, indicated that the FBI and the Obama administration might have played roles in spreading this narrative before the official investigation began.
The declassification of this sensitive information was coordinated by several high-profile officials, including CIA Director John Ratcliffe, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, FBI Director Kash Patel, and Attorney General Pam Bondi. Their efforts aimed to bring transparency to the controversial actions surrounding the Trump-Russia investigation.
According to the annex, Russian government actors allegedly hacked emails from the Open Society Foundations in 2016. Two emails reportedly originated from Leonard Bernardo, a regional director at the foundation. These communications suggested a strategy to disseminate information through FBI-affiliated technical structures like Crowdstrike and ThreatConnect, eventually reaching major U.S. publications.
The appendix also points to possible involvement by Hillary Clinton’s campaign in promoting the Trump-Russia narrative. Emails purportedly from Bernardo indicate that Clinton approved a plan to link Trump with Russian hackers, potentially as a distraction from her own email controversies. The FBI’s Crossfire Hurricane investigation into Trump’s alleged collusion with Russia was launched shortly after these communications.
John Durham’s team interviewed numerous FBI personnel involved in Crossfire Hurricane, concluding that the Bernardo emails were likely authentic. The report suggests that Clinton’s campaign may have expected or wanted federal agencies to support their efforts by initiating formal investigations. Durham’s findings highlight a failure by the FBI to critically assess intelligence related to these allegations.
The release of this annex has reignited debates over political manipulation within law enforcement processes during the 2016 election. Former Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation found no evidence of criminal conspiracy between Trump’s campaign and Russia. However, Durham’s ongoing probe continues to scrutinize the origins and conduct of these investigations.
