Steve Ricchetti, a key figure in President Joe Biden’s inner circle, underwent an extensive eight-hour interview with the House Oversight Committee. This closed-door session was part of an investigation into potential cover-ups regarding President Biden’s mental acuity. Ricchetti, who served as a counselor to the president throughout Biden’s term, was reportedly “combative and defensive” during the voluntary meeting, according to a source familiar with the proceedings.
During the interview, Ricchetti addressed concerns about President Biden’s age and mental sharpness. He acknowledged that Biden’s age was a political issue but maintained that the president was fully capable of performing his duties. Ricchetti expressed confidence in Biden’s ability to continue serving as president and even suggested that he could have been successful in a 2024 election bid.
Ricchetti’s association with Biden dates back to March 2012 when he became counselor to the vice president under President Barack Obama. He later served as Biden’s chief of staff starting in December 2013. Throughout his tenure, Ricchetti developed close personal relationships with members of the Biden family, including former First Lady Jill Biden and Hunter Biden. His children also held positions within the Democratic administration during Biden’s presidency.
The House Oversight Committee, led by Chairman James Comer, is examining whether top White House aides concealed signs of mental decline in President Biden. The investigation also seeks to determine if executive actions were signed without Biden’s knowledge. Ricchetti is one of several former aides questioned, though he is among the few who appeared voluntarily.
Ricchetti denied involvement in drafting physical evaluation letters for President Biden but admitted to discussing their communication with senior staff. He defended Biden against criticisms of frequent gaffes, describing them as common mistakes that have not increased since his vice presidency.
The questioning was predominantly led by Republicans, while Democrats attempted to shift focus to President Donald Trump. No lawmakers were present during the transcribed interview, which is standard procedure for such sessions. Ricchetti declined to comment to reporters following the meeting.
