The unexpected death of billionaire businessman Sunjay Kapur during a polo match in London has ignited a fierce succession battle over his Rs 30,000 crore estate. As the owner of Sona Comstar, a leading global auto component manufacturer, Sunjay’s passing has left many questions about the future of his business empire. The complexity of the situation is heightened by the presence of legal heirs from different marriages, adopted children, and a mother challenging boardroom decisions. This has made the inheritance issue one of India’s most intricate business family disputes in recent years.
Sunjay Kapur had three biological children: Samaira and Kiaan with his ex-wife Karisma Kapoor, and Azarius with his current wife Priya Sachdev Kapur. Priya also has a daughter, Safira, from her previous marriage to Vikram Chatwal. Whether Safira will inherit from Sunjay’s estate hinges on the existence and specifics of a will. Legally, stepchildren do not inherit unless formally adopted. Reports suggest that Sunjay had adopted Safira, potentially making her a legal heir. However, this adoption would disqualify her from inheriting from her biological father unless specified otherwise in a will.
Despite their divorce in 2016, Sunjay made financial provisions for his children with Karisma Kapoor. Samaira and Kiaan received bonds worth Rs 14 crore and are guaranteed a monthly income of Rs 10 lakh each. Karisma was also given ownership of a house previously owned by Sunjay’s father. These arrangements indicate that while Samaira and Kiaan may not inherit the business empire directly, they are financially secure.
As Sunjay’s legal spouse at the time of his death, Priya Sachdev Kapur is entitled to a significant portion of his estate if no will exists. Sunjay was the sole beneficiary of the RK Family Trust, which holds stakes in Sona Comstar through Aureus Investments Pvt Ltd. In the absence of a will, Priya is likely to manage these assets. Their son Azarius is also expected to inherit a share of both the trust and personal wealth.
The management of Sona Comstar continues under its existing board despite rising family tensions. Rani Kapur, Sunjay’s mother, has raised allegations against board decisions, particularly Priya’s appointment as a non-executive director without family consultation. The company refuted these claims, stating that all decisions were made with due process and shareholder approval.
Following Sunjay’s death, Sona Comstar shares fell by 7%, reflecting investor concerns over succession issues. The company reassured stakeholders that operations remain stable and committed to honoring Sunjay’s legacy.
Sunjay Kapur died after experiencing an allergic reaction during a polo match at Guards Polo Club in London. He reportedly swallowed a bee, which led to a heart attack after exiting the field.
