A significant illegal surrogacy and sperm trafficking operation has been dismantled in Secunderabad, leading to the arrest of ten individuals, including Dr. Namrata, the manager of Universal Srushti Fertility Centre. This crackdown follows a complaint from a couple who discovered through independent DNA testing that their surrogate child had no genetic ties to them.
The investigation began when a couple from Rajasthan, now residing in Secunderabad, reported their concerns to the police. They had paid Rs 30 lakh to the fertility centre for surrogacy services three years ago. However, after the child’s birth this year, their requests for DNA verification were repeatedly postponed by Dr. Namrata. Taking matters into their own hands, the couple conducted independent DNA tests in Delhi, which confirmed that the child was not genetically related to them.
Upon receiving the complaint, Hyderabad North Zone DCP Rashmi Perumal led a swift police operation. Late-night raids at the fertility centre resulted in the seizure of crucial documents and sperm samples for forensic analysis. The investigation revealed an extensive interstate network involved in the illegal collection and transportation of reproductive materials to states like Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh.
The police arrested Pankaj Soni, regional manager of Indian Sperm Tech, along with six others involved in sourcing and shipping reproductive materials. Dr. Namrata allegedly collected over Rs 30 lakh from the couple and misled them about the surrogate child’s origins. Authorities are now probing potential violations of surrogacy laws and medical ethics regulations.
Officials suspect that more fertility centres and agents might be part of this illicit network. The investigation aims to uncover all entities involved and ensure compliance with the Assisted Reproductive Technology (Regulation) Act and other relevant laws.
