A recent survey conducted by the Democracy Institute has revealed mixed opinions among Americans regarding the imposition of tariffs on India due to its continued purchase of Russian oil. The survey found that 53 percent of respondents opposed the tariffs, while 43 percent supported them. This decision by President Donald Trump to impose an additional 25-percent tariff on Indian goods, raising the total to 50 percent, has sparked significant debate.
The tariffs, set to take effect in three weeks, have been criticized for potentially straining US-India relations. Despite Trump’s assertion that India’s economy is “dead,” a majority of survey participants (64 percent) view India’s growing economic influence as beneficial. Additionally, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is perceived positively, with 59 percent of respondents believing his leadership is advantageous for America.
Patrick Basham, founding director of the Democracy Institute, noted that while Americans generally support protectionist tariffs as an industrial policy tool, they are less enthusiastic about using tariffs for geopolitical leverage. The survey showed an even split (44 percent to 44 percent) on whether Trump’s tariffs are beneficial for America.
The survey also highlighted concerns over the H-1B visa program, with over 60 percent of respondents favoring its termination. This sentiment reflects fears that the program prioritizes foreign workers over Americans, particularly affecting highly skilled Indian professionals.
In response to the tariffs, India’s Ministry of External Affairs has labeled the move as “unfair” and “unjustified.” The Indian government is actively engaging with stakeholders to assess the situation’s impact on nearly 55 percent of its merchandise exports to the US. Meanwhile, Trump has ruled out further trade negotiations until the tariff issue is resolved.
