Connecticut Teen Acquitted in Prep School Lacrosse Player’s Death

Raul Valle, who faced charges for the fatal stabbing of Fairfield, Connecticut prep school lacrosse player James “Jimmy” McGrath in March 2022, has been found not guilty of murder and intentional manslaughter. Valle was also acquitted of first- and second-degree intentional assault. However, the jury was unable to reach a verdict on charges of first-degree reckless manslaughter and first- and second-degree reckless assault, leading Judge Shari Murphy to declare a mistrial on those counts. Valle, now 20, was visibly emotional upon hearing the verdict. He was 16 at the time of the incident, which occurred during a brawl following a house party.

James McGrath, a 17-year-old lacrosse player at Fairfield College Preparatory School, was fatally stabbed during the altercation. Outside the courtroom, McGrath’s father, Kevin McGrath, expressed shock at the verdict but acknowledged the fairness of the trial process. He emphasized that although he believed Valle would be convicted, he respected the jury’s decision. Kevin McGrath also expressed gratitude towards first responders, investigators, and the media for their professionalism throughout the trial.

The family’s attorney, Michael Rosnick, noted that the state might pursue a retrial on the lesser charges where a mistrial was declared. Meanwhile, criminal defense attorney Donna Rotunno commented that the not-guilty verdict on murder charges was justified given the circumstances. She argued that Valle’s actions did not demonstrate the intent required for a murder conviction.

During the trial, Valle testified that he acted in self-defense during a chaotic fight involving numerous teenagers. He claimed he felt threatened and overwhelmed when he used a knife handed to him by a friend. The jury deliberated extensively before reaching their decision, reflecting on Valle’s self-defense claim.

The incident occurred on May 14, 2022, when police responded to reports of a fight outside a residence in Shelton. Witnesses described a large brawl involving around 25 people. McGrath suffered a fatal stab wound to his chest. Valle was released on $2 million bond shortly after his arrest.

James McGrath is remembered fondly by his family and friends as an enthusiastic athlete and cherished member of his community.
