Thailand Enforces Martial Law on Cambodian Border Amid Escalating Clashes

Thailand Declares Martial Law Following Deadly Clashes

Thailand has declared martial law in eight districts along its border with Cambodia after a series of deadly clashes. Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai warned that the ongoing conflict, which has already displaced over 130,000 people, could potentially escalate into a full-scale war. The clashes, which began on Thursday, have involved heavy artillery, tanks, and ground troops from both nations. The United Nations Security Council is scheduled to hold an emergency meeting to address the crisis.

Casualties and Evacuations Amidst Rising Tensions

The Thai health ministry reported that more than 138,000 people have been evacuated from the border regions. The conflict has resulted in 15 fatalities, including 14 civilians and one soldier, with an additional 46 individuals wounded. On the Cambodian side, artillery strikes have led to the death of a 70-year-old civilian and injuries to five others. Despite efforts to maintain peace as neighbors, Thailand has instructed its military to respond decisively if the situation worsens.

Diplomatic Efforts and International Reactions

Thailand’s foreign ministry expressed openness to diplomatic negotiations, potentially involving Malaysia as a mediator. However, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet accused Thailand of withdrawing from a proposed truce. Meanwhile, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi described the casualties as “deeply distressing” and urged for a calm resolution. Cambodia has not disclosed its casualty figures but reports indicate several soldiers and civilians have been injured.

Historical Context of the Border Dispute

The current conflict is part of a long-standing border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia over their shared 800-kilometer frontier. Previous clashes between 2008 and 2011 resulted in numerous casualties and displacements. Although a UN court ruling in 2013 temporarily resolved the issue, tensions resurfaced in May following the death of a Cambodian soldier.

Impact on Local Communities

In Cambodian towns near the border, residents are fleeing their homes amidst gunfire and artillery strikes. Many are seeking refuge in Buddhist temples or other safe locations. The ongoing violence poses significant risks to civilian infrastructure, with reports of damage to hospitals and petrol stations.
