Shashi Tharoor Comments on BJP’s Role in Choosing Next Vice President

Tharoor’s Insight on Vice Presidential Selection

In the wake of Jagdeep Dhankhar’s resignation, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor expressed uncertainty about who will be the next Vice President of India. On Saturday, Tharoor stated that he has “no idea” who the successor will be, but emphasized that the nominee will likely come from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). This assertion stems from the composition of the Electoral College, which consists solely of members from the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, unlike the Presidential election that also involves state assemblies.

Electoral Dynamics and BJP’s Influence

The Vice President is elected by an Electoral College comprising both elected and nominated members of the Rajya Sabha and elected members of the Lok Sabha. With a total strength of 782 members, a candidate needs at least 391 votes to win, assuming full voter turnout. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by the BJP, currently holds a significant majority with 293 members in the Lok Sabha and 129 in the Rajya Sabha, totaling 422 supporters. This majority suggests a strong likelihood that the BJP’s nominee will secure the position.

Call for Opposition Consultation

Tharoor also expressed hope that the ruling party would consult with the Opposition during the selection process. However, he acknowledged uncertainty about whether such consultations would occur. The Congress leader’s remarks highlight ongoing political dynamics and the importance of cross-party dialogue in India’s democratic processes.

Election Timeline and Procedures

The Election Commission has announced that the Vice Presidential election will take place on September 9, with notifications issued on August 7. Candidates must file their nominations by August 21. The results will be declared on polling day itself, ensuring a swift transition following Dhankhar’s resignation.

Dhankhar’s Resignation and Health Concerns

Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned as Vice President on July 21, citing health reasons. His term was originally set to end in August 2027. Despite official statements attributing his resignation to health issues, sources suggest a possible rift with the government over disagreements related to Justice Yashwant Varma’s impeachment. Dhankhar had been hospitalized multiple times over the past year, although specific details about his health remain undisclosed.
