The tragic death of Darcy Connolly-Brunner, mother of former WNBA player Sophie Brunner, has left a community in mourning. On August 9, Connolly-Brunner, 61, was involved in a fatal head-on collision on Illinois Route 26 in Stephenson County. The crash occurred when Rolando Ico-Choc, 30, drove his Nissan Altima across the center line, colliding with Connolly-Brunner’s Ford Edge. Both individuals were pronounced dead at the scene, according to Stephenson County Sheriff Steve Stovall.
Sheriff Stovall expressed his personal connection to Connolly-Brunner, describing her as a cherished member of the community who was known for her kindness and generosity. Her untimely death has left a significant void among family and friends who admired her dedication and warmth.
The investigation into the crash revealed that Ico-Choc was a Guatemalan national residing illegally in the United States. He had a criminal history, including charges of aggravated DUI with a suspended or revoked license earlier in 2023. Authorities suspect alcohol may have been a factor in the crash, although there was no indication that Connolly-Brunner was under the influence.
Illinois state Senator Andrew Chesney highlighted the role of state legislation in Ico-Choc’s presence in the country. He criticized the TRUST Act and the SAFE-T Act, suggesting they contributed to Ico-Choc’s ability to remain in the U.S. illegally. Chesney called for their repeal, emphasizing the need for stricter immigration enforcement to prevent similar tragedies.
Sophie Brunner, known for her basketball prowess at Arizona State and her time with the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury and San Antonio Silver Stars, is now facing personal loss. Her mother’s death has resonated deeply within the Freeport community, where Sophie was once a local sports star.
