A devastating train derailment occurred in a wooded area near Riedlingen, Baden-Wuerttemberg, Germany, resulting in the deaths of three individuals and injuries to many others. The incident took place on Sunday evening at approximately 6:10 pm local time (1610 GMT) as a regional passenger train carrying about 100 people was en route from Sigmaringen to Ulm.
Initially, police reported four fatalities, but this was later corrected to three confirmed deaths. The exact number of injured passengers remains unclear, though emergency workers cited by tabloid Bild estimated around 50 people were hurt. The German rail operator Deutsche Bahn confirmed the fatalities and injuries, noting that two train carriages derailed for reasons still under investigation. Authorities have suspended traffic over a 40-kilometer stretch of the route as they continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the accident.
Severe storms sweeping through the region may have contributed to the derailment, with some reports suggesting a landslide as a potential cause. In response to the accident, emergency services, including firefighters and helicopters, were deployed to assist and transport injured passengers to nearby hospitals. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed his condolences via social media and assured that emergency services would receive all necessary support.
This tragic event has reignited discussions about Germany’s outdated train infrastructure, which frequently faces criticism for delays and technical issues. The government has committed to investing several hundred billion euros in infrastructure modernization over the coming years. This incident follows a similar derailment in June 2022 near a Bavarian Alpine resort that resulted in four deaths and numerous injuries. Germany’s most catastrophic rail accident occurred in 1998 when a high-speed train derailed in Eschede, Lower Saxony, killing 101 people.
