The cricketing world is abuzz with discussions about the future of Indian cricket stalwarts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in One Day Internationals (ODIs). As the October series against Australia looms, speculation mounts that this could be their final appearance in the format. Despite their impressive form, both players are reportedly not part of the plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup. Former BCCI selection committee member, Devang Gandhi, has voiced his opinion that it’s time to make way for emerging talents like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan.
Gandhi argues that young players such as Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant, and Sai Sudharsan have demonstrated their adaptability and potential. He emphasizes the importance of transitioning from T20s to Tests, suggesting that success in Test cricket should naturally lead to proficiency in ODIs. Gandhi stresses the necessity for selectors and team management to deliberate on this transition.
Although the BCCI has yet to make an official announcement, reports suggest that Kohli and Rohit may need to participate in domestic cricket to extend their ODI careers. Gandhi, however, questions the feasibility of this approach, highlighting the need to prepare young players for future World Cups. He warns that if either veteran fails to perform, there might not be enough time to groom a suitable replacement.
Gandhi acknowledges the significant contributions of both Kohli and Rohit but underscores the inevitability of change. He believes that time is a crucial factor in ensuring a smooth transition and preparing a new generation of cricketers for upcoming challenges.
