In a significant move, the Trump administration has issued new guidelines requiring federal agencies to protect religious expression within the workplace. This directive, outlined in a memo from the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), aims to ensure that federal employees can freely express their religious beliefs without fear of discrimination or reprisal. The guidance, titled “Protecting Religious Expression in the Federal Workplace,” was disseminated by OPM Director Scott Kupor and highlights the administration’s commitment to upholding constitutional freedoms.
The memo emphasizes that federal employees should not have to choose between their faith and their careers. It outlines permissible religious expressions, such as displaying religious symbols like Bibles, crucifixes, or mezuzahs on desks, praying during breaks, and engaging in respectful religious discussions with colleagues. The guidance also allows employees to invite coworkers to religious services and ensures that personal religious expression is protected unless it imposes an undue hardship on business operations.
Kupor’s memo underscores the importance of creating a welcoming environment for employees of all faiths. By prohibiting religious discrimination, the guidance seeks to enhance recruitment and retention of highly-qualified individuals who practice a faith. The memo also instructs agencies to review and potentially revise their internal policies to better protect religious expression.
This initiative follows President Trump’s executive orders aimed at eradicating anti-Christian bias and establishing a Religious Liberty Commission. Additionally, the establishment of a White House Faith Office earlier this year reflects the administration’s broader efforts to empower faith-based entities and align policy changes with American values. The office collaborates with community organizations and houses of worship to better serve families and communities across the nation.
