During a meeting in Scotland with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, President Donald Trump expressed his dissatisfaction with the European Union’s lack of financial assistance to Gaza. Trump highlighted that while the United States had recently contributed $60 million for food aid to Gazans, European nations had not provided any support. He emphasized the absence of acknowledgment or gratitude for the U.S. aid, stating, “We gave $60 million two weeks ago for food for Gaza, and nobody acknowledged it. Nobody talks about it.”
Trump also addressed the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, urging Israel to make a decisive move regarding hostages still held by Hamas. He noted the importance of reaching an agreement to end the conflict and return hostages, despite acknowledging that many hostages may no longer be alive. “But we have a lot of bodies, and the parents want those bodies as much as they would want their child if that child were alive,” Trump remarked.
According to Trump, Hamas is hesitant to release the remaining hostages due to fears of losing leverage against Israel. He mentioned a recent discussion where Hamas hardened its stance on hostage negotiations, suggesting that Israel must make a critical decision in response.
In contrast to Trump’s criticism of the EU, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have been actively working to deliver humanitarian aid into Gaza. Despite previous restrictions on aid flow, Israel conducted 28 airdrops in a single day and transferred approximately 250 trucks full of aid into Gaza over the week. An IDF spokesperson clarified that their efforts are focused on supporting civilians rather than Hamas.
The IDF has countered claims of starvation in Gaza as propaganda by Hamas. However, hunger remains a pressing issue in the region due to previous failures by the United Nations and IDF to agree on aid distribution methods. The situation highlights ongoing challenges in providing effective humanitarian assistance amidst conflict.
