President Donald Trump has publicly criticized Georgia’s former Lieutenant Governor Geoff Duncan following his decision to switch from the Republican Party to the Democratic Party. Trump expressed his disapproval on Truth Social, labeling Duncan a “total loser” and stating “good riddance.” This reaction comes after Duncan, who served as Georgia’s lieutenant governor from 2019 to 2023, was expelled from the state’s GOP earlier this year due to alleged disloyalty.
In an op-ed published in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Duncan explained his reasons for joining the Democratic Party. He cited policy disagreements and a shift in his political beliefs that began before Trump’s response to the 2020 presidential election loss and the events of January 6, 2021. Duncan emphasized that there was no specific moment that triggered his decision but rather a gradual change in his political perspective.
This is not the first time Trump has voiced his dissatisfaction with Duncan. On August 3, 2024, Trump called for Duncan’s removal from the Georgia GOP, describing him as a “bum” and criticizing his role as a CNN contributor. Trump accused Duncan of using his platform to undermine him and the Republican Party.
The Georgia Republican Party expelled Duncan in January after he endorsed President Joe Biden during his re-election campaign and later supported Vice President Kamala Harris when Biden withdrew. The party also instructed Duncan to cease using his Republican credentials in public appearances, accusing him of attacking the party through his media engagements.
