Trump Criticizes Zelenskyy Over Land Swap Dispute, Plans Meeting with Putin

Trump’s Criticism of Zelenskyy

President Donald Trump has publicly criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy regarding his stance on land swapping amid the ongoing conflict with Russia. During a press event on Monday, Trump expressed his disagreement with Zelenskyy’s approach, stating, “I get along with Zelenskyy, but, you know, I disagree with what he’s done, very, very severely, disagree. This is a war that should have never happened.” Trump attributed part of the blame for Russia’s 2022 invasion to the Ukrainian leader’s actions.

Land Swapping Controversy

The controversy centers around Trump’s proposal for land swapping as a potential solution to the conflict. Trump criticized Zelenskyy’s insistence on obtaining constitutional approval for such actions, remarking, “I was a little bothered by the fact that Zelensky was saying, ‘Well, I have to get constitutional approval’.” He questioned why approval was needed for land swaps when military actions were already underway.

Zelenskyy’s Response and Legal Context

In response to Trump’s proposal, Zelenskyy emphasized that any land swap would require a national referendum under Ukraine’s constitution. Despite not declaring war on Russia—since the invasion had already occurred—Zelenskyy declared Martial Law on February 24, 2022, with parliamentary approval to mobilize a military response.

Trump’s Upcoming Meeting with Putin

As the Ukraine conflict remains a focal point, Trump is preparing for a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Describing it as a “feel-out meeting,” Trump stated he would quickly assess the potential for reaching an agreement. He expressed his intent to urge Putin to end the war and suggested that if he had been re-elected in 2020, the invasion might not have occurred.

Hopes for Ceasefire and Diplomatic Efforts

Trump expressed optimism about achieving a ceasefire swiftly and indicated plans to engage with European leaders and President Zelenskyy in pursuit of a successful resolution.
